Dog training can be overwhelming – not just for the dog, but for the human, too! Look beyond the outdated ideas of correction based obedience training. Obedience is not the solution to all of your dog’s problems.
What we have been told is a “bad dog” is almost always them trying to communicate something to us. Setting them up for failure to “teach them a lesson” suppresses behavior, causes confusion, and does not get to the root of the problem causing the behavior.
Besides, dogs don’t understand the concept of being “taught a lesson”.
Every dog is different, and I tailor my support to the individual needs of both the dog and family, but the foundation is a reward and evidence-based training method that is effective for all dogs, regardless of their breed, age, size, or temperament. No dog needs a heavy hand, shock collar or a prong collar, for any reason. Anyone that tells you they do is lying.
My approach to addressing your dog’s behavior goes beyond obedience, and my methods are free of intentional force and punishment. Punishment creates an unhealthy relationship with not just your dog, but the whole family.
Using concepts from the Hierarchy of Dogs Needs and Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, we address all the aspects of their life
- health and wellness
- positive home environment
- meeting their mental and physical needs
- life skills required to navigate the human focused world they live in.
Something lacking in any one of these might be what is causing that “bad behavior” you want to change.
Supporting your dog and their behavior is a team effort. Depending on the behavior and severity we might need to work with your vet or maybe a specialist.
